Presented in fine rosewood frame.

A print of this subject was published in May 1790 by W. Byrne of 76 Titchfield Street, London, inscribed : Jos. H. Farington RA Delint. J. C. Stadler fecit. It proved popular and many subsequent variations followed .

Joseph Farington (1747-1821) was a London topographical artist. He made his reputation for subjects such as this which were translated into coloured aquatint prints through his association with professional printmakers such as Joseph Stadler.

Farington’s primary 1789 ink and wash drawing  is held by the Museum of London. It’s possible that the present sheet was a working drawing for the printmakers.
