Description
This superb pen and ink drawing is a study for the oil painting by Legros in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Legros also made an etching of the subject (reversed) titled “Les Bucherons”.
Woodcutters were a persistent theme in French Realist painting. Their activities were recorded by many artists including Jean-Francois Millet. They lived on the fringes of rural society leading a primitive existence in the heart of the forests..often regarded as hostile and resentful of landowners, keeping to their own traditions and beliefs.
